Intracranial haemangioma: clinical features and radiological appearances.

چکیده
Since the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intracranial cavernous haemangioma has become the most commonly identified occult vascular malformation. The following case report demonstrates the characteristic radiological appearances and highlights the central role of MRI in the diagnosis of this lesion. CASE REPORT A thirteen-year-old boy presented with a six-week history of a progressive left hemiparesis, with no associated symptoms. Clinical examination revealed an upper motor neurone weakness of the left arm and leg. Examination was otherwise unremarkable. Computed Tomography (CT) (Figure 1) and MRI (Figure 2) of brain were performed. The CT images demonstrate an irregular, mainly hyperdense lesion in the periventricular white matter adjacent to and causing compression of the body of the right lateral ventricle. Foci ofhigh attenuation, consistent with calcification, are present within the lesion, and a surrounding low density zone of oedema is noted. The lesion is seen on MRI to extend superiorly into the centrum semiovale and inferiorly into the upper basal ganglia on the right. It demonstrates a 'popcorn' appearance, with a reticulated core of mixed signal intensities. Appearances are typical of a cavernous haemangioma containing haemorrhage in various stages of evolution.' Cervical capillary haemangioma: a case report.
Capillary haemangioma is a common benign lesion occurring at multiple areas of body. They have unique radiological appearances and are confirmed by histological examinations. However capillary haemangioma of cervical region is a very rare condition. Such a case is presented here. It presented as an extramedullary intradural mass compressing the cord and corresponding root giving rise to myelora...
متن کامل‘Pseudo Wine Glass’ Radiological Appearance of Intracranial Haemorrhage as a Result of Chemotherapy-Induced Thrombocytopenia and Red Cell Sedimentation
The radiological features of intracranial haemorrhage are well described in the literature, but atypical appearances can sometimes develop. We report a case of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia resulting in fatal intracranial haemorrhage in a man undergoing autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation. The CT showed an unusual appearance, with separation of blood products and fluid withi...
متن کاملNeurological manifestations in haemangioma of the vertebrae.
Haemangioma of the vertebrae is believed to be extremely rare and of little clinical importance, because most often it is detected as an incidental radiological finding in patients examined for complaints thought to be related to other diseases. However, haemangiomata of the vertebrae have been found on examination in large necropsy series in a much larger proportion than suggested by clinical ...
متن کاملRecurrent proptotic diplopia due to congestive expansion of cavernous haemangioma with relapsing right-sided cardiac failure.
A 75-year-old man with a recent history of pulmonary embolism, presented with collapse followed by a gran mal seizure and right-sided non-pulsatile proptosis. On recovery, he had diplopia on lateral and upward gaze and signs of congestive cardiac failure. Further pulmonary embolism was proven by lung scintigraphy. Computed tomography of his orbits confirmed a contrast-enhancing space-occupying ...
متن کاملCentral haemangioma: variance in radiographic appearance.
Central haemangioma, a "great mimicker" which, fortunately, is a relatively rare condition, may pose a lethal risk for the patient. The diagnosis may become apparent only during biopsy or tooth extraction, which poses a risk of lethal exsanguination; therefore a correct diagnosis is desirable before any biopsy is undertaken. The clinician may not anticipate the severe haemorrhage because of vag...
